Pepper sambar Recipe

Ingredients for preparing Pepper Sambar 

  •  Shallots :1 cup
  • Tomato : 2
  • Drumstick : 2 nos.
  • Green chillies : l-2 nos.
  • Toor dal: 1 cup
  • Turmeric Powder : ½ tsp
  • Tamarind : gooseberry sized ball
  • Red chilli powder : ½ tsp
  • Pepper powder : ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder : 2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds powder :1 tsp
  • Asafoetida powder : A pinch
  • Coconut oil : As needed
  • Mustard  : 1 tsp
  • Urad dal : 1tsp
  • Cumin seed : ½ tsp
  • Dry red chilli – 2
  • Curry /coriander leaves : few
  • Salt as needed

Steps for preparing Pepper Sambar

  1. Pressure cook toor dal with turmeric powder and curry leaves.
  2. Heat oil in a pan; add chopped shallots, tomatoes and green chillies. Stir for 5 minutes. Then close the pan with lid and allow it to cook for few minutes.
  3. Then add toor dal and drumstick to the pan, add water and bring to boil. When all vegetables are cooked minimize the flame, add red chilli powder, Pepper powder, Coriander powder, tamarind juice and salt. Stir well and boil it till it becomes thick.
  4. Then add Asafoetida powder and Fenugreek seeds powder. In the mean time heat oil in a pan add mustard seed and allow it to splutter.
  5. Then add urad dal, cumin seed, dry red chilli and curry leaves. Fry it for 2 minutes, pour it to the sambar. Garnish with coriander leaves.
