Spinach Sambar Recipe

Ingredients for preparing Spinach Sambar
  • Chopped spinach: 2 cups
  • Small onion ( shallots) : handful
  • Tomato : 1
  • Toor dal: 1cup
  • turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
  • tamarind : small gooseberry size
  • Red chilli powder : 1tsp
  • Coriander powder: 2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida powder : A pinch
  • garlic – 2 cloves
  • Thick coconut milk : ½ cup
  • Coconut oil : As needed
  • Mustard  seed : 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seed : 1/2 tsp
  • Dry red chilli : 2
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt as needed
Steps for preparing Spinach Sambar
  1. Wash toor dal and pressure cook it with turmeric powder and curry leaves.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add chopped onion and tomato. Fry for a while, then add garlic and chopped spinach, close the pan and cook it with medium flame.
  3. Then add red chilli powder, coriander powder to it and stir for a while. Mix it with cooked toor dal, bring to boil. Then add tamarind juice, asafoedia powder and fenugreek powder. Add salt as needed.
  4. Finally add thinck coconut milk, boil in low flame.
  5. Heat oil in apan add mustard seed and allow it to splutter,then add dry red chilli, cumin seeds and curry leaves. Fry for a minute. Pour it to the sambar.
