Moong Dal Sambar Recipe

Ingredients for preparing Moong Dal Sambar

  • Mixed vegetables – 2 cups
  • Moong Dal – 1 cup
  • shallots – handful
  • Tomato –  2
  • Green chillies –  2
  • Turmeric – a pinch
  • Tamarind juice s – ½ tsp
  • Chilli Powder – ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder -1tsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Fenugreek seeds powder – ¼ tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seed – ½ tsp
  • Shallot  – 1
  • Dry Red chillies -2
  • Curry leaves few
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil : As needed

Steps for preparing Moong Dal Sambar

  1. Wash thoroughly moong dal and soak it in water for 15 minutes, pressure cook it with pinch of turmeric powder and curry leaves.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add shallots, tomato, red chillies, mixed vegetables and curry leaves. Fry it for 5 minutes, add salt and stir well. Then Close the pan with lid, low the flame and cook the vegetables for 5 minutes.
  3. Once vegetables are done add chilli powder and coriander powder, stir for a while. Mix it with cooked dal, bring to boil add tamarind juice, Asafoetida powder and Fenugreek seeds powder. Keep it in low flame.
  4. Meanwhile heat oil in a pan, add mustard seed, chopped shallots, cumin seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves. Pour this to the sambar. Thoroughly stir sambar and allow it to boil for 3 minutes.
