Ingredients for preparing Tomato Sambar
- Toor dal (Sambar Parippu) : 1 cup
- Normal /cherry tomato : 2 – 3 cups
- Shallots : Handful
- Green chilli : 4
- Turmeric powder : ¼ tsp
- Red chilli powder : ½ tsp
- Coriander powder : 1 tsp
- Asafoetida powder : A pinch
- Tamarind : small lemon size
- Onion : small piece
- Mustard : ½ tsp
- Fenugreek seeds powder : ¼ tsp
- Cumin seed : ½ tsp
- Dry red chilli : 2
- Curry/coriander leaves : few
- Oil : As needed
- Salt : as per taste
Steps for preparing Tomato Sambar
- Wash thoroughly toor dal and soak in water for 15 minutes. Pressure cook dal with turmeric powder and curry leaves.
- Heat oil in a pan, add onion, and fry for a while. Then add tomatoes and green chilli, close the pan and cook in low flame. Add Red chilli powder and Coriander powder and stir for a while.
- Mix the cooked dal with fried tomatoes add tamarind juice, asafetida powder and salt and bring to boil. Finally add Fenugreek seeds powder and boil it.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Add cumin seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves, fry for a minute. Pour it to the sambar.
- Mix well and boil it for few minutes, add coriander leaves.
