Tomato Sambar Recipe

Ingredients for preparing Tomato Sambar
  • Toor dal (Sambar Parippu) : 1 cup
  • Normal /cherry tomato : 2 – 3 cups
  • Shallots : Handful
  • Green chilli : 4
  • Turmeric powder : ¼ tsp
  • Red chilli powder : ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder : 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida powder : A pinch
  • Tamarind : small lemon size
  • Onion : small piece
  • Mustard : ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds powder : ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seed : ½ tsp
  • Dry red chilli : 2
  • Curry/coriander leaves : few
  • Oil : As needed
  • Salt : as per taste
Steps for preparing Tomato Sambar
  1. Wash thoroughly toor dal and soak in water for 15 minutes. Pressure cook dal with turmeric powder and curry leaves.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add onion, and fry for a while. Then add tomatoes and green chilli, close the pan and cook in low flame. Add Red chilli powder and Coriander powder and stir for a while.
  3. Mix the cooked dal with fried tomatoes add tamarind juice, asafetida powder and salt and bring to boil. Finally add Fenugreek seeds powder and boil it.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Add cumin seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves, fry for a minute. Pour it to the sambar.
  5. Mix well and boil it for few minutes, add coriander leaves.
